State information

Iowa

A high-level overview of immigration enforcement activity, school protection policies, and resources for families and educators in Iowa.

Overview

State context

Iowa has a significant and long-established immigrant community tied to meatpacking and agricultural processing. The Postville, Iowa ICE raid in 2008 — then the largest workplace enforcement action in U.S. history — had devastating effects on local schools and families. ICE remains active across the state. No state law protects schools from immigration enforcement.

ICE activity

ICE is active in Iowa, with recurring operations targeting meatpacking communities. Marshalltown has experienced multiple significant enforcement operations. The state's compliance-cooperative posture facilitates enforcement.

School policies

No statewide school protection policy. Some school districts with large immigrant populations, including in the Iowa River Valley corridor (Postville, Marshalltown, Storm Lake), have worked to support immigrant families, but without formal warrant-based policies.

Notes for advocates

The Postville raid and subsequent operations are a defining event in Iowa's immigrant community history. Postville's school enrollment dropped dramatically following the 2008 raid. Storm Lake and Marshalltown have large, established immigrant communities whose children attend public schools. Advocates in Iowa have extensive experience with rapid response to enforcement operations.
