State information

Michigan

A high-level overview of immigration enforcement activity, school protection policies, and resources for families and educators in Michigan.

Overview

State context

Michigan has limited state-level immigration enforcement protections. Detroit has the largest immigrant population in the state and has maintained a more welcoming local posture. The Detroit metro area also includes Dearborn, home to the largest Arab American community in the United States. ICE is active across the state, particularly in the Detroit metro area and in agricultural communities.

ICE activity

ICE is active in Michigan, particularly in the Detroit metro, Lansing, and Grand Rapids areas, and in agricultural communities in western Michigan. Operations have targeted immigrant communities across a range of nationalities.

School policies

No statewide school protection policy. Detroit Public Schools Community District has informally worked to support immigrant families. Dearborn Schools, serving a large Arab American community (many of whom are U.S. citizens), has maintained strong community relationships.

Notes for advocates

Michigan's immigrant communities are highly diverse, including large Arab American, Mexican, Yemeni, and Southeast Asian populations. West Michigan (Grand Rapids area) has a significant Latino immigrant community tied to agriculture and manufacturing. The state's lack of formal school protections leaves many students vulnerable.
