State information

Tennessee

A high-level overview of immigration enforcement activity, school protection policies, and resources for families and educators in Tennessee.

Overview

State context

Tennessee has no state law protecting schools from immigration enforcement and has generally cooperated with federal enforcement. Nashville has a large and growing immigrant community and has maintained a more welcoming local posture, though state law constrains formal sanctuary policies. The state has seen significant immigration enforcement activity.

ICE activity

ICE is active across Tennessee, particularly in Nashville, in the Middle Tennessee manufacturing corridor, and in the poultry processing communities of western Tennessee. Nashville's Antioch neighborhood has experienced significant enforcement operations.

School policies

Metro Nashville Public Schools has worked to maintain welcoming environments and issued some staff guidance, but no formal warrant-based policy is in place. State law creates a challenging environment for formal district-level protections.

Notes for advocates

Nashville has undergone one of the most dramatic immigrant community transformations of any Southern city, with large Kurdish, Somali, Latino, and Southeast Asian communities. The city's schools are highly diverse. Shelbyville has a significant Somali community tied to the local poultry plant. Advocates in Tennessee have focused on legal services and rapid response to enforcement.
